CHOOSING THE RIGHT ENGRAVING MACHINE IN JUST 5 EASY STEPS!

AFTER NEARLY A DECADE OF SUCCESSFULLY FINDING HOMES FOR ENGRAVING MACHINES, WE'VE FINALLY GOT IT DOWN TO A SCIENCE!  DRILL DOWN THESE 5 EASY STEPS AND YOU'LL BE ON YOUR WAY!  BUT FIRST.....

DIMENSIONS

The size and thickness of the items you want to engrave are key as well. Are all your items flat or are some curved or even cylindrical? Choosing a machine without this information is like buying shoes without knowing who they're for.

What type of material do you need to be able to engrave on? Engraving machines are usually designed to work within a specific realm of substrates and some work better on particular types of materials than others.

MATERIAL

How many items do you need to crank out in a day, week or month? Making sure your machine can keep up with your demand is a key ingredient! You can save money and drive a golf cart to work, but you probably won't get there very fast.

QUANTITIES

STEP #3

BEFORE MAKING ANY MACHINE PURCHASE, ALWAYS TAKE INTO CONSIDERATION THE FOLLOWING!  THERE'S NOTHING WORSE THAN SPENDING THOUSANDS ON THE WRONG EQUIPMENT.

Ease of Use - Who will be operating the equipment and what type of skill sets will they need?

Real Estate - Where will the engraving equipment be installed and how will you get it there?  Some machines are portable while others take up an entire room.

Timeline - How soon will you need to have an engraving system up and running? Some machines are shelf items while others take several week to assemble.

Cost of Ownership - What consumable items will you be committing to buy and how will that affect your bottom line? Sometimes even electricity usage is a factor.

Maintenance - What level of upkeep is involved and what is the process if your machine needs repair?

Budget  - Determine a budget or monthly payment if you are financing. Engraving machines start at around 3K and can easily exceed 100K!

Kimberly Tidwell

(Campobello, SC)

"I cannot believe how WONDERFUL this machine is but I am amazed at the service you receive from the business itself! Engravers Machines Plus is an absolute wonderful company who goes over and beyond what they are suppose to do!! I could not work my machine and then Danny and Jessie stepped in and helped me! They made sure I had all the answers to my MANY questions!! I would not buy my stuff from anywhere else!"

"I had absolutely zero experience with an engraving machine (many thanks to Danny who helped me choose and sent out samples) so it was a bit scary to spend this much money but Jesse helped me get up and running via (quite a few) phone calls. He never got impatient with us (myself plus helpers) bumbling around trying to figure everything out and - lo and behold - we have it mostly figured out now! I was really pleased with the company and would definitely recommend them!"

“This machine was purchased to engrave industrial labels for our process. It has been easy to use and set up. We can now produce very high quality products in house saving us time and money. Danny has been great! If you have questions he always has great advise! Danny is easy to get in touch with and responds very quickly. If you are looking for an engraving machine look no further you have found the company you want to do business with!”

STEP #2

THERE ARE 3 DIFFERENT TECHNOLOGIES, EACH WITH THEIR OWN SET OF PROS AND CONS.  INDETIFYING WHICH ONE IS RIGHT FOR YOU EARLY ON, IS A STEP IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION.

LASER ENGRAVERS AND CUTTERS

The laser sources are what determines what you can engrave or cut and how quickly it can be done.  The most common are CO2, Fiber Optic and YAG.  Depending on the laser source and wattage, you could etch the surface of a material, weld it to another piece of material or cut entirely through it!  Lasers can be found as either Gantry Systems, where the lasers travel across an X/Y plain or as Galvo Systems, in which the laser is stationary and tiny mirrors control the direction of the beam.

ROTARY ENGRAVERS AND CNC ROUTERS

Rotary engravers utilize a physical cutting bit or end mill to both engrave and cut various substrates.  Footprints range from portable desktop units to massive flat beds that can take up an entire room.  The heart of a rotary engraing machine is it's spindle, which is what holds and rotates the cutting bits.  The rate at which the cutter is spun and the torgue applied by the motor that is spinning it, will determine the type of material that can be engraved or cut, along with how efficiently it can be done.  While there are application better suited for lasers, rotary engravers have several advantages over lasers and are still very much in demand.

DOT PEENS AND IMPACT PRINTERS

Dot Peens and Impact Printers utilize compressed air or electromagnetics along with a carbide or diamond tipped stylus to strike downward into the material leaving behind a pronounced dot.  The process is similiar to the old dot matrix printer technology in which several dots are arranged in sequence to compose text or images.  Dot Peens are very efficient and are typically used in factory or assembly line scenarios where speed is the most important factor.  There simple mechaics makes them extremely reliable and portable as well.  Part marking is a popular dot peen application as the item being engraved does not have to fit in a machine, rather the dot peen can be brought to the item instead.

Safety First - Does the engraver require fume extraction, ventialtion, dust collection or protective eye wear?  More importantly, can these requirements be met in your facility?
